I'm going against the grain here: Glen sings much better with the 109's. That said, I do enjoy the Kans too.

Even after 40 years, no other speaker divides opinion like Kans!

I remember that. I used to have Wakonda/LK140/mk1 Kans. I wonder now how much the x100/109s were a change rather than an improvement…Charlie1 wrote: ↑2023-12-11 23:31Reminds me of the comparison I did between a modern Majik-i (with Dynamik) vs Wakonda/LK140. The modern Linn amp was nice but a bit boring somehow. I recall you preferred the LK amps that time too.David Neel wrote: ↑2023-12-11 18:25 I’ve had both speakers in the past, and I’m surprised by the margin of my preference for the kans.
I find the 109s easier to follow (in a way) but less interesting with it, so not what you'd expect from a tune dem developed speaker.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I had to go back and forth several times on these two clips. At first I was drawn to the Kans as they have a punchy sound on the drums and vocals that does propel the sound. But on going back and forth I felt that the 109s were more even with the strings coming through more naturally (tunefully) instead of stuck in the back and the voice sounding a bit more natural. I find the bass solo in the middle a bit better on the 109s as well. I'm not usually on the fence this much but I'd probably need more music to decide which I'd like to live with. At this point maybe a small nod to the Kans. One of those speakers that shows how little loudspeaker design has really progressed over 4 decades!

They seem pretty close but I'll go for 2. 1 seems to be softening things up a little.

Not a huge difference but I prefer 1. And thinking 2 is the sheep.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I don't think we have been so divided for a long time. No. 1 was without sheepskin between cables to/from ADSM and the board it's standing on. No. 2 was with.Tendaberry wrote: ↑2023-12-15 21:04 To sheep or not to sheep, which one do you like more?

In the room I thought it was better, when I put the sheepskin there, but today when I removed it, I didn't really notice a difference. So, my conclusion is that I have to try other materials and see, if they bring an improvement. I have 3 mm thick natural latex (high quality, used in beds)here to try.

That is disappointing. In fact you've pulled the rug out from underneath me. I expected everyone to flock to the same conclusion ;)

Yes, surprised the results weren't more ewe-niversal - hopefully no-one is bleating that they bought a sheepskin and now feel like they've been fleeced :/springwood64 wrote: ↑2023-12-17 17:37 That is disappointing. I fear the continuing puns may result in several of us getting lambasted.
